USING THE COMPANION WITH THE STAR TREK ENCYCLOPEDIA ------------------------------ All of the video clips in the Companion can be accessed while you are using the 1999 version of the Star Trek Encyclopedia CD-ROM. When you are browsing in the Episodes index portion of the Encyclopedia, a VIDEO button will appear, inviting you to swap CDs to view the clip for that Episode. NOTE: It is not necessary to "install" the Episode Guide if you only want to see the episode video clips in the Encyclopedia. However, the episode synopses in the Companion are more detailed than the episode entries in the Encyclopedia; and the video clips in the Companion may be enlarged, while only one video size is available in the Encyclopedia. Scripts are only available here in the Companion. III. INSTALLING DEEP SPACE NINE(TM) COMPANION ------------------------------ Installation for Macintoshª Users: 1. Insert the CDROM into your Mac. 2. Double-click on the disk icon, "DS9 Companion" which appears on your desktop to open the CD's window. 3. Double-click the "DS9 Companion Installer" icon and follow the instructions which appear. 4. Macintosh - Starting the Program______________ Double-click the "DS9 Companion" icon in the "DS9 Companion Folder" folder. (If you would like to locate the Player in a more convenient location, you can make an Alias for it. How to Make an Alias: Select the Player icon by clicking on it only once. Type command-M. That creates a new icon you can drag anywhere.) Installation for Windowsª Users: 1. Insert the "DS9 Companion" CD into your CDROM drive. 2. From the START menu, select "Run..." If your CD-ROM drive is letter D, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and click "OK". This will begin the installation routine. Follow the onscreen instructions. For best performance, we recommend that you install all the options. You only need to install QuickTime once, so you may skip this option when you are installing the DS9 Companion as well. The version of QuickTime for Windows on the CD is 3.0.2. If you have an even later version, then you may skip the Quicktime option entirely. IV. ADJUSTING YOUR SYSTEM (Mac and Windows) ------------------------------ You may pre-set your monitor to thousands of colors (16-bit) or millions of colors (24-bit), but the program is optimized for16-bit (thousands). The fixed image size of Companion is 640x480, although the photo windows can be dragged anywhere. V. TROUBLESHOOTING ------------------------------ Having other applications open while the Companion is running can cause poor performance. We highly recommend quitting any other program, turning off networking, and disabling any unnecessary system extensions. WINDOWS USERS: VIDEO DRIVER SETTINGS Some problems, such as your computer locking-up upon startup of the Companion, can be traced to the settings of your display driver. In some cases changing the video resolution may help. Consult your hardware supplier's documentation for details if you need assistance with these settings. Also for Windows users: Please turn off wallpaper and disable any kind of custom shell program before running the Companion. Be advised that inadequate DOS memory is frequently the cause of poor performance or missing graphics or sound. VI.
